The custom of well dressing is unique to Derbyshire and is thought to have originated in pagan times. Well dressing is the art of decorating springs and wells as an offering for good water. The dressings are set in clay-filled wooden trays, mounted on a wooden frame and decorated with beautiful pictures and designs created from flower petals and other natural materials.
The well dressing season is from May to September each year, Tansley’s well dressings are in July.
All the children from Tansley Primary School are actively involved in this unusual local tradition. Each child has the opportunity to be part of the planning and making of our well dressings.
This year following the ‘Musicals’ theme for the well dressings in our village, children from Tansley Primary made a fantastic ‘Lion King’ (class 1, children aged 4 - 6 years), ‘Peter Pan’ a well with great character (class 2, children aged 7 - 8 years) and a spectacular ‘Mary Poppins’ (class 3 children aged 8 - 11 years).
